Driving my son home from his work yesterday, I eyed the mustard splotches and ketchup dribbles on his formerly white shirt. He turned and smiled at me.
“I had the most awesome experience tonight!” Judd beamed.
“I dropped a piece of chicken in the vat of hot oil. I was supposed to use the tongs to lift it out, but I was talking to Jose and wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing. I ended up dipping my hand—four fingers—in the boiling oil. The pain was unbelievable. I couldn’t stand it. And I prayed, ‘God, you said if we have the faith of a tiny mustard seed, You will do miracles. I pray now that this pain will disappear, that my hand will be healed at this moment. I’ve got that mustard seed of faith—I believe.’ And just like that the pain was gone! There were no marks on my fingers. God did a miracle at McDonald’s tonight!”
My eyes flooded with tears of gratitude and I looked at Judd, who wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.
Despite Judd’s faith, I found myself doubting. I wanted to creep into his room as he slept to check his hand for blisters. Thomas was an amateur doubter compared to me. Last night, I purposely didn’t look at those fingers Judd dipped in the oil, afraid I would see red inflammation there. I left the room when he sat down to type his English paper, not wanting to hear if he discovered that typing hurt his tender fingertips.
My reading in Matthew this morning reminded me that Jesus died and rose from the dead. After His resurrection, some followers worshiped Him, but some doubted. In the very face of a miracle, some doubted.
We see a miracle happen and we’re afraid to look, afraid it might not be genuine. So what’s the answer? We should stop trying to test the miracles! Instead, let us fix our eyes on “Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2, KJV). We should focus not on the blessings, but on God’s Son.
