Exercising Can Be Hazardous

In spite of a busy life, I try to be healthy. So I purchased a treadmill for my home. I never had a desire to appear publicly in those stretchy little exercise clothes or be seen sweating profusely by the physically fit. If I wanted to work out late or early it would require a trip to a gym in the dark—alone—and that just wouldn’t be safe! With resolution, I bought the perfect treadmill and promised myself to use it faithfully.

I managed to carve out a spot in a back bedroom for the monstrous machine. I dreamed of walking while I watched television, to enjoy a few programs and get in great shape at the same time. I hooked up an old TV and set it on top of a pile of boxes.

This was turning out well. I was getting up earlier, watching the morning news and taking a brisk daily walk.

The manufacturer had placed handlebars on the front and sides of the treadmill for safety. However, I noted that if I walked briskly with weights in each hand, I could remove far more pounds for every mile. Of course, it’s all about getting the biggest loss for my time, so I decided to give it a try.

Once I reached my version of warp speed, I let go of the handlebars, attempting to take a barbell in each hand. Then it happened! My body was suddenly in a position I didn’t know I could achieve. The treadmill was still moving, but I was wedged against the bookshelf at the end of the machine, with the rubber track stripping away layers of skin from my shins. Of course, that silly little clip for emergency shut off was not with me, like the manual said it should be. I had to find a creative way to stop the machine.

Staying home to exercise may not always be the safest option!
