I consider myself an organized person in the work world. I direct a staff who can get the job done. I wonder, then, why a few things in my home can get completely out of control. One of those problems occurs in my kitchen. The drawer where I place large utensils is a constant source of irritation. I can’t figure out how one drawer can get so out of control.
That large drawer on the left side of my sink contains every kind of spatula, spoon and scraper on the market. Add several awkward pairs of tongs and serving forks and the drawer starts getting crowded. Adding two sets of measuring cups for every possible recipe and endless sets of measuring spoons, both on and off their organizing rings, makes the drawer very tight.
Further, when I attend those kitchen parties, I return with helpful devices to make cooking easier. That’s what the friendly consultant always says. The special plastic gizmos that peel, trim and decorate fruits and vegetables or create works of art from meat and cheese add to my collection. They will be handy when I actually throw that elaborate party someday. And I certainly can’t get rid of the old sentimental things my mother gave me or the keepsakes from my first kitchen in college. You can only imagine the strain on this kitchen gadget drawer.
The gadget drawer tests my emotional health when I open it and the bowed bottom threatens to fall out. Sometimes spatulas slip halfway out and jam against the cupboard below. I admit I’ve snapped a few sturdy wooden spoons in half this way. It’s a test when I try to extract tangled tongs from a colander and grater while holding a hot kettle. That’s when I resolve to clean and organize that drawer when I finish cooking.
Yes, I wonder how one drawer in my kitchen can be so much harder to manage than an entire office! The only consolation I have, better known as sinking resignation, is that my mother had a kitchen drawer just like mine.
