Getting My Spot

Everyone needs a fun activity that serves as a treat or a hobby that helps us relax from the stresses of a busy life. I enjoy nothing more than fishing. Something is amazingly refreshing about being outdoors and outsmarting a fish. I recently bought a new reel and a bag full of new hooks and other paraphernalia to help me recover from a heavy work schedule.

My sisters do not fish. They will, however, come to my fishing spot and watch. So part of my preparation is not only getting my own gear loaded, but also planning for them. I pack a small cooler with their favorite sodas and goodies. I don't usually stop to eat or drink anything because I am too busy fishing. I also place padded lawn chairs, jackets, and their favorite books in the car so I will have more time to fish while they are entertained.

The last four times out at my favorite spot, I can honestly say that I caught some beautiful fish. The great part is that everyone fishing around me caught nothing but air. It was interesting to watch their mounting frustration as they saw me pull four large bass from “my spot.” Then it started. As I stepped over to place the fish on my stringer, a fisherman began to move over into my spot. I looked up and wagged my finger to let him know that "my spot" was not open for the taking. Once someone catches a fish, it is amazing how quickly other fishermen begin to slip closer to that spot.

At the end of my evening of fishing, I packed up my gear, packed up my sisters and their “gear,” and then turned to the three Hispanic fishermen near me. I grinned and in Spanish, offered them the fish I caught. With great surprise, they thanked and blessed me for the dinner I had just provided for their family. As I headed to the car, relaxed and happy, I turned one last time and told them, “Now you can have my spot.” Before I could start the engine, three fishermen were standing in my spot.

Pam and Kathy’s Tips for Fishing Fun

  1. Take a sister or friend who will have fun, even if they don’t like to fish.
  2. Either eat before you go or pack plenty of food so you aren’t hungry.
  3. Select a place that isn’t so far away that you run out of time before enjoying it.
  4. Have comfy padded lawn chairs for those who plan to sit and enjoy the scenery
  5. Bring a small cooler with beverages, snacks and even some chocolate
  6. Let those who fish, fish, and those who read, read. Maybe even enjoy a snooze.
  7. Make sure you “catch” at least one really fun memory, whether fish are found or not.
