Holiday Multi-tasking

I really don't know how this happens. I start a little project and it somehow turns into at least a half a dozen others. My sister and I experienced this just the other night. Earlier in the day, we decided to pull everything out of a large cupboard that hangs over the washing machine. This cupboard is exactly two inches too low, so the washer lid can't quite open all the way. The need to raise the cupboard has existed since spring when the washer was installed.

Once everything was pulled from the cupboard and piled on the washer and in boxes on the floor we got a phone call and had to leave for a few hours on a special shopping expedition. Upon returning to the house we realized that laundry had to be done so the washer and dryer had to be uncovered. Somewhere in the stuff from the cupboard were the soap and dryer sheets that were now needed. The cupboard is still hanging at the wrong level.

Now the bags of Christmas gifts were piled on the floor and it seemed like the smart thing to do was to start wrapping them. As my sister wrapped away, I was trying to start dinner and digging through the cupboard contents on the floor to find a missing ingredient. Maybe you can imagine me digging through cupboard contents on the floor with laundry needing to be moved from washer to dryer while Christmas wrap was flying and I was starting dinner on the stove. That's quite a picture!

With weather reports saying cold temperatures were headed our way, we hurried to the garage to pull all the Christmas decorations out of the attic. Now what appears to be countless storage tubs, boxes and bags are piled all over the living room. You guessed it! The autumn decorations have to be removed and placed in the storage closet where the cupboard items are piled. Well, we had part of the decorations up and then realized we needed to do just one more little project so that we could move the chair to create a place for the tree. Don't worry. It will all come together before Christmas, but until then, I would just love to finish raising the cupboard over the washing machine!

Pam and Kathy’s 7 Tips for Project Organization

  1. First, make a list of projects you want to tackle and then prioritize them.
  2. Select projects according to the time you estimate they will take.
  3. Refrain from jumping into other projects while you are busy. Add them to your list.
  4. Gather the tools or supplies needed before starting, to avoid stopping mid-project.
  5. Plan projects that will not interfere with other activities, weather or health limitations.
  6. Invite a friend to help with a project and then help her finish a project at her home.
  7. Don't let the never-ending list of projects keep you from fun with family or friends.
