“If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered” (Proverbs 21:13, NIV).
Sure, we can close our eyes to the needs around us. After all we have our hands full taking care of our own families. We figure that what we don’t know won’t hurt us, and better yet, we won’t be held accountable for our ignorance. Think again. If we decide not to acknowledge the desperate needs around the globe, what we choose not to know will eventually hurt us. The day will come when we need help, and our cries will be ignored. As moms our hearts are already tuned to taking care of the vulnerable and needy. Let’s take this sensitivity one step further and reach beyond our own children. Better yet, let’s bring our children along and model reaching out to others in the name and image of God.
Father, forgive me for being so concerned about myself and my problems that I’ve ignored the cries of those around me. Give me a big heart, like Yours, that cares deeply about those who are hurting and in need. I’ve enjoyed the benefits of Your generous heart; allow me the privilege of sharing that giving spirit with others.
