Richard Foster says, “The love of the Father is like a sudden rain shower that will pour forth when you least expect it…When this happens, do not put up an umbrella to protect yourself, but rather stand in the drenching rain of the Father.”
From this citation in the introduction of her book, Rebecca Barlow Jordan challenges the reader to spend forty days in God’s presence. Each devotion is around four pages long, and Jordan’s writing is conversational, warm and friendly.
The readings follow a consistent format: Jordan chooses a biblical character or event to center on, after which she shares how the story can have practical application in the reader’s own life. In some instances, she weaves a contemporary story into the mix. When she writes about Caleb facing the giants, for example, she tells of a young woman overcoming the “giants” of multiple physical handicaps. She deftly combines biblical context and contemporary application to give readers new appreciation for—and new revelation of—God’s great love.
Each devotion ends with a “Personal Truth” gleaned from the story, followed by a prayer and then a “Personal Question” encouraging readers to further reflection. Writers chosen and referenced by Jordan are well-chosen: Brother Lawrence, Oswald Chambers, Hannah Whitall Smith and J.I. Packer, to name a few.
Consider spending 40 Days in God’s Presence during Lent this year!
