Some find it difficult to spend protracted periods of time reading C.S. Lewis—though they may enjoy the essence of his writing, they find the level of intellect a bit daunting. If you fall into this category, you will love A Year with C.S. Lewis, a book of daily meditations culled from Lewis’s signature classics: Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Problem of Pain, Miracles and A Grief Observed, as well as from The Weight of Glory and The Abolition of Man.
Lewis’s ruminations on love, miracles, faith and loss are inspiring and challenging. His wisdom, for example, about the necessity of trials, is illustrated in this excerpt from The Screwtape Letters:
It is during such trough periods, much more than during the peak periods, that it is growing into the sort of creature He wants it to be. Hence the prayers offered in the state of dryness are those which please Him best.
Peppered throughout the book are biographical commentaries about Lewis’s life, giving the reader a glimpse of Lewis in the context of his work.
