If you enjoy biographies but simply don’t have time to wade through a lengthy tome, treat yourself to this compilation of 60 mini-biographies. As her children reached upper elementary grades, Joyce Vollmer Brown found it increasingly difficult to find devotional materials that were relevant to them. She believes, as did A.W. Tozer, that “next to the Holy Scriptures the greatest aid to the life of faith may be Christian biography”—and she set to work researching her subjects.
Brown offers a delightful variety, from giants of the faith like Corrie ten Boom, George Müller, Bill Bright, Billy Graham, Dwight Moody, Amy Carmichael and Martin Luther; to sports figures like Dave Dravecky and Tom Landry; to perhaps lesser known names like Darlene Diebler, a young missionary who spent three years in a Japanese prison camp, and Leann Thieman. She courageously journeyed to Saigon during the Vietnam War—despite reports that the whole country would soon fall to Communism—because she sensed she and her husband were to adopt a Vietnamese baby.
Appropriate discussion questions follow each biography. As a mom who homeschooled my three sons, I would think this would be a marvelous tool for teaching. Not only do readers learn about the subject of the biography; they learn geography and history, as the subjects of the biographies are from all over the world.
