Though not a Bible study per se, Encounters with God is an effective tool to help the reader learn how to study the Bible. According to the authors, a three-fold definition of Scripture offers a glimpse of the interaction a person can expect while reading it:
From this point on, chapters address how these things occur. The prerequisites of study include being born again and thereby receiving the indwelling Holy Spirit. From there, the authors discuss the very nature of the Bible, and how Old and New Testaments bear witness to the same God.
Brief descriptions of exegesis and hermeneutics are simply rendered, followed by three chapters of practical questions to implement during study: questions for personal preparation, questions for textual interpretation, and questions for personal application.
The authors give overviews of styles of literature in the Bible, enabling readers to better understand poetry, figurative language, prophetic literature, narrative literature, the gospels, Acts and the epistles. For those who find Revelation their toughest challenge, the authors offer some helpful tips for interpretation.
