The mere mention of Proverbs 31 often conjures up visions of spotless homes, handmade clothing and elegantly adorned dinner tables. Sometimes you can actually see women bristle when they hear the Scripture reference.
Rest assured, though, Lysa TerKeurst and Rachel Olsen are “normal.” They have days when organization is virtually non-existent, days when PMS spawns bad tempers and emotions run amok. Because they are real women, willing to be transparent about their own struggles, more than 150,000 women have subscribed to their Web site since they added a daily devotion in 2003.
Though the 175 devotional readings of God’s Purpose for Every Woman are in random order, they all illustrate one of seven principles outlined in Proverbs 31—an index at the back of the book gives each principle and the corresponding devotions.
Fifteen contributors tackle myriad issues, and I was impressed that these were not “fluff” devotionals. Sensitive titles such as “Loving Irregular Dad,” “The Ministry of Interruption,” “Shattered and Scattered,” and “My Septic Heart” boldly confront the reader with issues they may need to deal with or attitudes of the heart they may need to adjust.
If you are searching for a new devotional book to begin 2008, and are up for a challenge, consider adding God’s Purpose for Every Woman to your Christmas list.
