I’ll Bring the Chocolate

by Karen Porter

I'll Bring the ChocolateThe title of this book doesn’t begin to illustrate its depth of meaning. In its pages, Karen Porter identifies nine ways for you and your girlfriends to experience mature, lasting friendships through sharing life’s difficulties as well as its pleasures.

It is vital that women draw comfort and support from one another, according to Porter. We all know intellectually that God is always available to us, but when our struggles shake us to the core and threaten to overwhelm us, we may temporarily forget how to exercise our faith. That’s where spiritual girlfriends come in. They accept us with open arms, recognize God’s hand in every situation, offer emotional support and spiritual strength.

Most readers will agree that we don’t need superficial friendships. Rather, we need those friends who care enough to prod us to make better choices and encourage us in our walk with God. Porter admits such friends are rare, simply because many are not willing to be that open and honest. She shares about a Bible study group that met in her home: after years of meeting together, one man shared about his son’s struggle with drugs. The group embraced him with love and concern and prayer without judgment, and his transparency opened the door for a whole new level of communication. Porter calls this the “truth talk” level—a place where we can freely ask for help, and pray fervently for one another.

Each chapter concludes with a prayer and questions for reflection, as well as a recipe to create something sumptuously chocolate!
