As its title states, this study corresponds with Joy at Work, a book by Dennis W. Bakke that tells the story of AES Corporation. AES is one of the world’s leading power companies, yet one of the most prominent examples of a company that lives out the principles of business as stewardship and mission.
The overarching theme of this study is that God intends our work to be joyful, not a drudgery. It begins with “God’s Original Purpose for Business” as outlined in the first two chapters of Genesis. Later sessions cover topics like trust, values, influence, failure and success, and the rewards of stewardship. The themes of joy, stewardship, human dignity, responsibility and humility surface throughout the 8–10 week session. A companion DVD, designed to provide a 15-minute introduction to each session, is included.
Challenging questions are posed to the reader, such as “How might you rewrite the purpose of your company using the language of ‘stewarding God’s creation’?” and “How would your role at work be affected if your job were understood according to the responsibilities of a ‘fellow heir with Christ,’ as described in Romans 8?” Such questions are woven throughout each session, and is augmented by group discussion questions at the end of the chapter.
This is no “feel good” Bible study—it is for people who take seriously the mandate to be salt and light in their world, and aren’t afraid to tackle tough issues. Dennis Bakke successfully walked these principles out at AES Corporation, so the reader can be sure Bakke knows what he’s talking about.
