By J.I. Packer (©1973)
Many books over time have been cherished by Christians who deemed them a vital part of their spiritual growth. In the 1970s, one book seemed to tower above the rest—J.I. Packer’s Knowing God. Packer is one of the foremost theologians of our time (yet one of the gentlest, humblest men I have ever had the privilege to know), and the timeless message of this book will impact lives long after he is gone.
It is vital to turn our knowledge about God into knowledge of God, and that is what Packer entices his readers to do. Those who truly know God have great energy for God, have great thoughts of God, show great boldness for God, and have great contentment in God. To attain such knowledge, two things are necessary: 1) we must recognize how much we lack knowledge of God; and 2) we must seek the Savior. Our knowledge about God must not be measured by our gifts and responsibilities in the church, but by how we pray and what goes on in our hearts. Packer laments that many of us have no idea how impoverished we are at this level, and need to ask God to show us the magnitude of our need.
Packer encourages his readers to meditate on God and His endless attributes, with chapters like “God Unchanging,” “The Majesty of God,” “God Only Wise,” “The Love of God,” “The Grace of God,” “God the Judge,” and “God Incarnate.”
“I know nothing which can so comfort the soul, so calm the swelling billows of sorrow and grief, so speak peace to the winds of trial, as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead.” Charles H. Spurgeon addressed his congregation with these words over a century ago. Today, we can delve into the mysteries and the wonder of God with great classics like Knowing God.
