In an age where both men and women are indulging in reconstructive surgery as never before, Perfecting Kate offers a distinctly biblical perspective. Kate is a thirty-something mural artist who has never been married. Though attractive, Kate is drawn into the world of cosmetic enhancement when a famous makeup artist points out her imperfections and convinces her they are easily remedied.
Suddenly Kate begins to garner the attention of suitors who are appreciative of the changes in her appearance. Though flattered, Kate knows these changes are superficial, and longs for a relationship with a solidly Christian man. Enter Dr. Clive Alexander, a surgeon whose grief over the loss of his wife and son in a fire has driven him to open a burn unit in the local hospital. When he commissions Kate to paint murals in the unit, a mutual attraction begins.
Though decidedly Christian “chick lit,” Perfecting Kate probes the issues surrounding the characters’ actions—Kate’s dissatisfaction with her appearance; whether it is right for a Christian to have cosmetic surgery; Dr. Alexander’s anger with God because of what happened to his wife and son; Kate’s distance from God when the demands of her career crowd out her normal Bible study and journaling.
Kate is a memorable character facing modern dilemmas, and her self-deprecating humor
