Many readers may already be familiar with Jennifer Rothschild’s story, having seen her in concert or read her book Lessons I Learned in the Dark: Steps to Walking by Faith, Not by Sight. At the age of 15, she was diagnosed with a rare, degenerative eye disease that left her legally blind.
Rothschild has a distinct advantage over those of who can see—she literally cannot walk by sight. This six-week study takes the reader on a journey similar to the one Rothschild has walked herself. Each week has five lessons, complete with study questions and occasional “extra credit” activities. Both encourage the reader to delve deeper into the Scriptures, and to learn valuable lessons from the dark roads others have traversed.
Refreshingly, Rothschild employs several Scripture translations in her study, including New International, New American Standard, The Message, New Living, Amplified, New Century, and Contemporary English—as well as King James Version. This alone may be enough to stretch the reader who is accustomed to using only one translation.
Along with typical Bible study questions, more challenging soul-searching ones are included to prompt the reader to reflection and meditation.
Lyrics to three of Rothschild’s songs are appropriately integrated to complement the lessons. The study concludes with a five-page Leader Guide.
