When David viewed the majesty of the universe, he questioned the significance of mankind. Eugene Peterson paraphrased his questioning in Psalm 8:
Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, Why do you bother with us?
Why take a second look our way? (Psalm 8:3,4, The Message).
As we considered this question last week, our conclusion was that the only reason God bothers with mankind is His great love. The question that follows in my mind is:
One of the most versatile forms of new technology is the Global Positioning System, which tells persons who own an appropriate receiver exactly where they are at any time day or night. The friendly GPS monitor can also help us know where we want to go and what time of day it is. No need to be lost anymore, anywhere on the planet.
Other forms of technology put us in touch instantly with an unlimited number of people, via e-mail or text messaging. We can accumulate friends through MySpace and Facebook and surround ourselves with music on our iPods®. No need to be lonely with so much companionship.
But technology cannot put us in touch with our deepest inner need, which is the need for authentic relationship with God. No technology has been designed to put us in instant contact with Him. In spite of the technological advancement we have, we may feel lost and lonely at times. Our technology may separate us from people rather than help us develop meaningful relationships. We may even wonder, when we consider the vastness of the universe and the density of population, Does God know where I am?
What technology cannot do, the timeless truth of God’s Word can; it can put us in touch with God. The Bible assures us:
The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good (Proverbs 15:3, NIV).
How can this be, we wonder? Knowing that God is not limited by the dimensions of time and space in the way mankind is helps me to understand this passage. If God sees everyone everywhere, He sees me—right here, right now.
God’s omnipresence is not an isolated truth found only in an obscure proverb. It is affirmed repeatedly in Scripture. Job knew it as did the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Amos. David wrote in the Psalms:
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there (Psalm 139:8, NIV).
Knowing God is here right now, and that He “bothers” with people because of His great love, leads me to the wonderful conclusion: God knows where I am this minute and He loves me. Can there be any greater knowledge than this?
The Global Positioning System has three parts: the satellites orbiting the earth collecting information, the monitoring stations and the personal receivers owned by individuals. The first two systems are out there, filling the air with information discovered only by those with active handsets.
Similarly, God is omnipresent—even in greater dimensions than the GPS—but only those who open their hearts to Him are in a position to receive His love. John even used this terminology in his gospel:
He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:11,12, NIV).
Believers are the ones who have their “receivers” turned on and learn they are His beloved children!
How authentic is your relationship with God? Is He someone you know about or someone you know intimately? Let your knowledge of God and His Word shape your experience with Him, making His loving presence in the here and now real to you.
