A recent newspaper article discussed the changes technology has made in libraries. While many of us grew up gaining information from books, today we have the whole world at our fingertips through the World Wide Web. With this in mind, instead of our usual recommendation of a good book to read, we are listing some Web sites designed especially for you—the minister’s wife.
A recent article in Time, entitled “Pastors Wives Come Together,” listed several interesting sites. The article covered Free to Soar, the pastors’ wives conference in January, sponsored by Global Pastors’ Network. Included were interviews with several pastor’s wives.
The article opens with:
“HELP WANTED: Pastor's wife. Must sing, play music, lead youth groups, raise seraphic children, entertain church notables, minister to other wives, have ability to recite Bible backward and choreograph Christmas pageant. Must keep pastor sated, peaceful and out of trouble. Difficult colleagues, demanding customers, erratic hours. Pay: $0.
“The basic job description for pastors’ wives hasn’t changed in a century. But pastors’ wives have….”
They go on to discuss the changes today’s pastors’ wives have made. You can read the article at: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1604902,00.htm.
We checked out the Web sites they refer to and found them quite helpful. These, of course, are cross-denominational so you may find some differences from our own Fellowship, but much of the information will be beneficial.
www.PastorsWives.org was started by a pastor’s wife as a newsletter. It is now a large Web site with helps for family life, spiritual life, and a column for recipes.
www.SarahsTent.com was started by a pastor’s wife when she was searching for help to meet her own needs. The founder is also an illustrator and cartoonist. She includes an
idea column for various segments of church life.
www.GPWN.tv is the site of Global Pastors’ Wives Network. Designed as a home, you can click on the various rooms from bedroom to kitchen to discuss various aspects of ministry.
One different site was established by a former pastor’s wife after she and her husband left the ministry and returned to the business world. The site www.LLLMinistries.org gets its name from the three values: love, life and living.
You may have visited some of these sites or you may have found others helpful. If you have, we would like to hear from you so we can share those Web sites with others.
And if you would still like a good book to read this summer, you might check out Peace Like a River by Leif Enger (Grove Press, 2001). The blurb on the back describes it well:
“Enger brings us eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles. Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw brother who has been controversially charged with murder. Their journey unfolds like a revelation, and its conclusion shows how family, love and faith can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies.”
Without saying it, Enger raises issues such as the justification of war and the validity of faith and miracles. He concludes the book with a description of heaven that will make you want to go there.
