Local Women’s Ministries Feature—Otter Creek Assembly of God

The women of Otter Creek Assembly of God, in Little Rock, are going beyond makeup parties and bake sales. Boldly, these women are impacting their area. They are flooding the streets with God’s love, reaching out through prison ministries and ministering to the homeless.

Debra Brown, Women’s Ministries coordinator, said most of these ministries have started over the last year and a half. “The prison ministry is doing well, women have really stepped up.” Women go to the prison where they minister to other women ages 12 to 17. This time includes music, a speaker and one-on-one conversation. “Our girls are getting to minister to other girls at their level.”

Moving from the church pews to the streets, these women are putting faith into action as they bring joy and hope to the homeless. Every Saturday, women prepare lunches and take the meals to homeless people. Besides lunch, “We have a food pantry at the church, and we give them food,” Brown said. This relationship opens the door for more. After providing lunch on Saturday, the women go back and pick them up for Sunday service. They also provide clothing and coats. “[The homeless people] are very grateful. They welcome the warm meals and clothing we provide to them.”

Who better to minister to women than other women? The women at Otter Creek do this through Joy Fellowship, for women churched and unchurched. The women meet monthly. Brown said, “We have door prizes and gifts for all the attendees. It is a more relaxed time of fellowship. We have seen Joy Fellowship grow. Women come in and listen to us minister to the groups. They break down and cry as they realize that this is what they have needed. They are looking for something and finding it in Joy Fellowship, and our groups are growing from it.” The fellowship is also used as an opportunity to let women know what other ministries are available and to get involved.

“We always have something going. Our ladies are very warm and make everyone feel a part. We make women feel comfortable. This is bringing in younger women. That has been really good. Otter Creek is a great place to be and we have a lot of opportunity for women to be involved in ministries,” Brown said.
