The energy in the room is nearly combustible as 500 women gather for a night of fun, laughter, drama and fellowship. It is called “Girlfriends” and that is exactly what it is—women young and old joining for one incredible night all about being a girl.
Four times a year, Trinity Church in Cedar Hill, Texas, coordinates the “Girlfriends” meeting. At each meeting, the women are presented with a variety of Friendship Groups. These groups change every three months and are centered around things that women enjoy doing. Out of the 500 in attendance, 200 to 250 of them do not attend Trinity Church, making Girlfriends an outreach to the community and a chance for women outside the church to build relationships within the church.
Becky Hennesy, director of Women’s Ministries at Trinity Church, said there is a group for every woman, at any age and with any interest. The group themes include cooking, shopping, tennis, fitness, scrapbooking, tea/coffee time and more. Every group is different.
A senior citizen, who is the church receptionist, meets with more mature women on Tuesdays for lunch. Hennesy said, “She just pours into them and helps them. She is kind of like the mom who believes in them.”
Forever Friends is for women in their 40s who are going through transitions. “Their children are leaving home and going to college, and the women may be going through menopause,” Hennesy said. The group builds a network of friends to talk about these issues.
Cooking for the Ronald McDonald House is another group women can be involved with. Once a month women get together and cook for families staying at the house. This ministry has evolved to cooking for families in need and cooking meals for Hurricane Katrina victims who come to their area.
Hennesy said, “The Friendship Groups are a non-threatening way for people to build relationships around their interests. They are giving women a place to belong. It really has been able to touch different women at different stages in their lives.”
